Pet Professor

Teaching elementary school children about responsible pet care, safety and ownership.

The Pet ProfessorSM Program Educates Over 2,000 Children in Pinellas County Classrooms Annually

The Pet ProfessorSM Program is the cornerstone of our commitment to educating future generations. The curriculum includes respecting animals, responsible pet ownership, and safety when dealing with animals. Students recite the Jr. Pet ProfessorSM Oath. This hands-on program presents practical lessons that provides students with an opportunity to interact with a live animal.

We can use volunteers and their pets for this important program. If you might enjoy teaching the great lesson of responsible pet ownership to children ages 5-11 in Pinellas County schools click here for more information about volunteering.

Pet Professor In School Program

Specially trained volunteers and their screened pets comprise this elite team of Pinellas Pet Education Partnership teachers who visit nearly 1,000 classrooms annually. Using a fun curriculum of interactive practical lessons, this program’s goal is to teach responsible pet ownership to elementary school children in grades Kindergarten thru Third.

Teachers administer to children a 12-part “Junior Pet Professor Safety Oath” to encourage a commitment to respect all animals. Junior Pet Professors often help other family members and friends to enjoy a safe and loving relationship with a family pet. Partnerships include: Edna’s Pet Professor; Edna Klauser Trust, Humane Society of North Pinellas; Pinellas County Animal Services; Pinellas County School Speaker’s Bureau; Pinellas County Veterinary Medical Society, SPCA of Pinellas County, SPC-Veterinary Technology Program.

Pet Professor – Ellen Gallo

Ellen Gallo, the Pet Professor, is on a mission to reach out to every child in Pinellas County. She nd her dog, Sophie, visit elementary schools and summer camps in an effort to make kids aware of the benefits of the basic responsibilities of pet ownership.

The Pet professor Program is a branch of the Pinellas Animal Foundation. The PAF partners with local veterinary hospitals, animal shelters and other non-profit organizations to promote the human-animal bond.

Ellen has always had a love for animals. It was  in 2002 though, while participating in the Great American Teach In for her son’s class, that Ellen discovered her love for teaching school-aged children about animals. Becoming the Pet Professor allows opportunity for fulfilling that passion. She has visited over 25 classrooms and spoken to over 2000 kids since beginning the program in 2009. Her goal is to become a fixture in the Pinellas County schools and the premier elementary educator of pet safety and responsibility.

Ellen’s Pet Professor materials are tailored to the particular age group she is working with, focusing mostly on pre-kindergarten through 5th grade and special needs groups. She covers the five basic needs of companion animals: food, water, shelter, exercise and love. Animal safety and the bite prevention are also discussed with young children. More advanced concepts, such as population control and basic healthcare, are discussed with older children.

The Pet Professor has an ambassador, a Harlequin Great Dane named Sophie. Sophie has been raised by Ellen for eight years now, ever since Ellen rescued the 6 week old puppy. This faithful companion accompanies Ellen to all of her engagements. Sophie’s quiet and calm nature overshadows her impressive size; so children of all ages are naturally drawn to her. Sophie’s kind and gentle spirit is most notable in her interactions with special needs children.

In addition to visiting classrooms, Ellen and Sophie are available for outreach and community events throughout Pinellas County.

Ellen is a native of Florida, has been married for 23 years and has two teenage children, three dogs and two cats and of course, Sophie! Besides working full-time at East Bay Animal Hospital and developing her Pet Professor responsibilities, she also operates her own pet-sitting business.
